On November 30, Glasgow City Council hosted a meeting about starting a community currency to serve the people of Glasgow.
Councillor George Redmond emphasised the council’s support for the idea of a Glasgow Pound. He pointed out that 30 per cent of Glaswegians already use credit unions, suggesting some history of local economic support in the city.
“You can see the potential for it in Glasgow, it would help to retain money in the community. That helps to support local economic development, jobs and businesses. Glasgow has always been at the cutting edge of economic ideas,” he said.
Making plans for a community currency in Glasgow
Cllr Redmond was excited about what a currency could do for local pride in Glasgow by celebrating local stars like Billy Connolly or Alex Ferguson.
Attendees heard from leaders of local currencies around the UK, including the People’s Bank of Govanhill, the Bristol Pound and the Eko at the Findhorn Community.
In the second half of the meeting, each table was asked to consider what a local currency should do for its community.
